Weekend Recap – Likes Up, Credibility Down

Let’s get into all the cheating that goes on in the Dj industry. From Facebook likes to Soundcloud plays to the Dj Mag Top 100 rankings, Dj’s are cheating the system all over the place, and we’re gonna talk about it. Also in the news, Mix Emergency is working with Serato again, Deadmau5 unveils his new stage and Forbes releases a new list of 2011′s top paid DJ’s.

    I’ve noticed a lot of this bull on my Soundcloud. I’ll notice a slew of ppl follow me, and I’ll check my account in the next day or so, and my follower count only goes up by 2 or 3. Obviously this is ppl following you, only to get you to follow back, then deleting you no matter what, or because you don’t follow back immediately. Pretty lame, but hey, I can’t knock a person’s hustle, even if it is pure skank. Some try to do this with Soundcloud comments too; when will it end?

    Brian — you’re right, it’s not guaranteed either way! The thing about cheating tho, is that “making it” is the hardest part — so if you make it, you can always build your craft after the fact, and then attain some longevity. It sucks lol.

      I agree to your response in part, because if you can find a way to make it, like you mention, you can build up some longevity. Of course some may make it and Im more than sure have faked it to make it, however I was coming more from the angle of what if a person cheats to make it, and because they cheated and faked out their audience, that same audience if they find out may turn their backs and not respect you, so with word of mouth, it can lead you into a downward spiral of limited success, and that’s where I bring in the longevity issue. A good example is when Milli Vanillis cover was blown for lip syncing and not being the real singers, having “Ghost singers” singing for them, when their fanbase and the public found out, literally over night they had gone from mainstream stardom to having to give back their Grammy, and never recovered a successful comeback. They couldn’t achieve longevity on the basis of faking it till they made it, and as you point out, they did just that, they built their Milli Vanilli empire, and probably could of gone for some time had their cover not been blown, and that was a sad story because they weren’t even the ones to come up with that scheme, it was their manager, producer who cooked that up for them! My point basically wraps around, especially in these “Tabloid and Internet days” the fact that dishonesty will come back around and bite back at some point, and it seems it always does in some shape or form in the good ol shape of Karma!! lol :)

    Great recap guys! Yeah, this really shines a light on all of it when you think about the Entertainment Industry in this Internet age we live in, and what you may have to do to stay on top of your game.

    There’s ONE goal shared by all in Entertainment, and that’s to make it to the top, however there’s MANY ways to make it to the top, and that’s where the difference comes in to play from one person to the next; it basically comes down to what vehicle we choose as our transportation towards the top!

    In the world today, the Internet can and has become a DJ/Remixer/Musician/Artist and Producers best friend, and like mentioned, in this Social Media age, there are many ways to inflate your status and presence in this Industry. The question you have to ask yourself, “Do I want to cheat and have a chance at quicker success?”(which I’m still not guaranteed), or “Do I want to take the long route and build myself up by having my music speak for me in terms of garnishing a real fan base which hopefully in turn brings about a lot of networking for me via word of mouth?” 

    I think either way, its a shot in the dark. 50/50, if you ask me. Look at success stories of DJs and Artists alike who make one Production with virtually little to no gear, and overnight they become an Instant sensation profiting big time. And then, on the other side of the coin, you have DJs and Artists who have worked there a$$ off for years, spending money on top gear and working 10+ years before they ever get discovered, so at best its the luck of the draw, networking, the right place at the right time, and other things all factor in. But what if you can avoid all that red tape by cheating? Would you if it meant instant success? 

    Having instant success by cheating doesn’t warrant or guarantee you longevity in your career, and furthermore, if your cover is blown, your fan base may tend to drop you like yesterdays news, on the grounds that they were deceived from the very beginning and now feel violated. I think we all have heard of similar cases regarding this type of success at one point in time or another.

    My philosophy on this: To each their own. We all hold close what we think is moral or what we feel can advance us in one way or another, and quite frankly, I myself am in no way about preach to another what they should or shouldn’t do in one situation or another, because whos to say my way is right. I can give advice, but I would never interfere with anothers final decision on what they felt was the right thing for them to do. I’m big on “To each their own” and I can only worry about whats right for me :)
