Edit Edition: DJ Jay Spring

One topic that JD and I will definitely discuss in the future, is how we go about making our “club mix” cds. Some people might be surprised how much work actually goes into these mixes. When you’re trying to fit 30 to 40 songs in an 80 minute mix, you are constantly shortening songs, while trying to make sure the best parts are still incorporated. This can be a tedious, sometimes difficult process, but one that is necessary if you are gonna rip through songs on your mix.

With that said, I just got done making a couple new mixes ( DOWNLOAD FROM MY BEEZO PAGE). As much as I wanted to just knock them out, it took a lot longer than expected because of the reasons given above. Since I did spend a good amount of time editing tracks, I figured I might as well share some on our Edit Edition. Here’s a few quick hitters/cutdowns and an Aca Out:

From the Uptempo Mix –

DJ Godfather ft. Pittsburgh Slim – I Wish I Was A DJ (Quick Hitter)

This is a dope track from DJ Godfather’s new album “VIP Status” which is available on ITunes right now. Alot of our buddies such as The Disco Fries, DJ Deville, DJ X-Change, DJ Serafin, and Discotech have supplied remixes for this project, so make sure you guys support!! As for this edit, I just trimmed it to go Intro, Chorus, Verse, Chorus, DJ AM Shout, Outro.

Drake – Find Your Love (DJ Enferno Remix) Cutdown Edit

This really is a must-have remix!! It gives so much life and energy to a track that is originally very mellow. Not much to say, but Enferno just kills this. (Make sure to go back and watch our interview with Enferno if you haven’t yet!) In this edit, I basically cut the track in half so you can run quickly through your house set.

Usher Ft. Pitbull – DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love (DJ Kue Remix) Cutdown Edit

DJ Kue is definitely a big force in the House scene and I’m sure you’ve seen his mixes all-over the record pool sites as well as on RatedH. He’s earned a reputation for putting out quality upbeat remixes and this one is no excepton. For this track, I just took out Usher’s second verse, which means Pitbull show’s up a little bit sooner

Diplo Ft. Lil Jon – U Don’t Like Me (Acapella Out)

It seems like Dubstep is getting more and more popular every day. This is a real dope track that might just trick the Hip-Hop crowd into liking that genre. I think this edit is pretty important to have if you are gonna mix this with other Hip Hop. The Aca Out makes it much easier to mix back into normal Hip Hop beats.

Episode 088 – Intro to Beats & Bars

Today’s episode is a primer course, a 101 if you will, for our upcoming “Tricky Counts” series. This episode lays the groundwork for how to properly count beats and bars so that everyone can be on the same page when we dive into talking about confusing songs and song counts in the future. Please use this episode as a reference and watch it as many times as you need to. If you don’t have any musical background or are new to DJing, this stuff can be intimidating and difficult to understand, but with a little time and practice you can use this knowledge to become a much better DJ! The Anthem Kingz have been on a roll lately, constantly putting out club bangers and quickly becoming the go-to remixers on Crooklynclan.net. This time they took Taio Cruz’s smash “Dynamite” and blended it with an nice instrumental version of “Don’t Stop Believing.” It works best around the end of the night, but if you can read your crowd right, you may be able to sneak it in earlier. Weekend Recap

Yes, this was another busy weekend – I did the usual Friday, Saturday, Sunday. However, the real work was put in at my place on my computer. All four of the major remix sites are currently having big sales, which lead to JD and I performing a nice, quality raping. After dropping a little loot, (yes we support our friends!), we came away with close to 100 new tracks. No, we don’t have plans on playing 100 remixes in a row, BUT, now we do have plenty of new ammo to keep from going stale. I’m not gonna go in depth about this experience now, instead I will save it for tomorrow’s editorial, so make sure to check back manana. I will say this now though: All the DJs who are constantly asking how to switch up your sets, head to the sites now while you can get double for your money!!

Trust me, this isn’t an advertisement — this is advice. Between all four sites, there is definitely plenty of useful stuff that we all are better off having in our crates! Stock up now while you can get the most bang for your buck. Again, more on this tomorrow. (Don’t wait for our editorial before you buy, because the sales may be over!)

Speaking of the remix sites, I hope by now that everyone has copped DJ AM’s “It Takes Rock” from CrooklynClan. It’s a track I draw for each and everytime I play at Scorpion Bar. Of course, with this weekend being the one year anniversary of AM’s passing, it made me think a little as I loaded it onto my serato deck. I wish the crowd knew that this was an AM remix and if I had a mic there, I would have definitely mentioned it. This track was really mind blowing to me the first time I heard it. It was done about five or six years ago, and that was before doing something like this was more commonplace. My crowd hears it every week and it never fails. AM still lives for sure.

Finally, big shout out to Clinton Sparks!! He’s been busier lately (busy is normal for him) knocking out tons and tons of custom edits of “Favorite DJ”.
When someone goes out of their way to take care of us, we NEED to support them. This is a dope record to begin with, so that shouldn’t be asking too much. Yes, another weekend has come to an end, and like Spring said, a good couple hours of it went to sifting through the remix sites for a few quality remixes/mashups. You really have to dig sometimes, but you’ll find some gems. And at $.99, even if you get a flop or 2, it’s not the end of the world.

If you like sales, you should also check out Guitar Center’s sale through tomorrow where you can Buy 1, Get 1 Free on select items. I picked up 2 50ft. XLR cords for $50 and plan on getting 2 more by tomorrow. We always need more wires!!

I have to say, this weekend was great. The energy Friday night at Shrine was off the hook and I felt really good about my set. Saturday I played a local bar, for the first time in a long time, for a friends birthday party. It was an interesting night. It was one of those, do I play what the person who hired me wants to hear, or what the girls dancing want to hear, kind of nights. Everyone said they had a great time, so I guess I bridged that gap alright. Until next weekend…

Episode 085 – Let Me Clear My Throat (Playlist)

“Let Me Clear My Throat” is possibly the best club crowd participation song of all time. Dj Kool used the 45 King’s “900 Number” break to create a high energy background for his 1 hit. This track is another one that just works. This is how we use it in our sets.

Episode 084 – One (Four Color Zack Remix)

Swedish House Mafia’s “One” has been the biggest house song of the summer, but working it into your set in an open format club has been tricky. Pharell’s “Your Name” version has been great, but Four Color Zack really hit it on the head with his edit which acts more like a party break. It’s worked great for us. Oh Yeah by Foxy Brown featuring Spragga Benz is a classic high energy reggae/hiphop song from the early 2000’s and is used by both of us often in our sets. It really calls to be quick mixed because it’s chorus is so high energy that is looses a lot of steam as soon as the verse hits. In todays episode we each give you a peak into our playlists and give examples of what we sometimes play before and after “Oh Yeah” in our sets.
