Nice list here guys! Great discussion as always. Any DJ who opens for themselves more often than not knows that the Peak Hour is the easy part and opening is the part that requires excellent organization and a different selection of music EVERY TIME!!

I totally agree with Spring as far as throwing those tracks that you typically forget to play into that opening set. I just realized about a couple weeks ago that I had never even played “Moves Like Jaggar” once, so I decided to throw that into the opening set (Max Methods – Swagger Like Jagger is a good one). Definitely gets the ladies going!

What I was going to say, though, is that sometimes the opening set can be a good time to “break” new music by sprinkling within the older stuff that has gone past it’s prime. Might not want to do it too close to the headliner coming on, but it usually does work pretty well. Some tracks that I have been adding to my opening set are:

Sean Paul – She Doesn’t Mind (Anthem Kingz Redrum)
David Guetta Ft. Akon – Crank It Up
Kylian Mash Ft. Akon – Club Certified (Bombs Away Remix)
David Guetta Ft. Will.I.Am – Nothing Really Matters

Any newer tracks that have been working well for you guys??

This is an excellent list and covers a great selection of opening songs to reach for. Im glad Spring mentioned the difference of Bottle vs.Top 40 club Mainstream/Prime Time differences for those who may not know because this is important in determinating which of these songs listed as openers can still be played as mainstream prime time tracks in a Top 40 club. As I was going thru the list prior to listening to the video, I too thought what Spring mentioned, seeing a lot of these tracks still can fair very well in a Top 40 clubs DJ Prime Time set.

Years ago before the whole House trend was upon us, many Top 40 club DJs would reach for slower/older 90′s R&B and Hip Hop to fill out the “opening” slow hours before the club would fill up, and even today a lot of clubs including Bottle service still set thier opening 9 pm hour to these older slow BPM but classic tracks at a slightly lower volume in order to contrast the beginning of the night with the transitional progression ramping up to the Prime Time higher volume hour. Also like Spring mentions, DJing at a Top 40 club, for the most part you “are” the DJ for the duration of the night, so as a DJ you have different avenues of remixes to select from depending on what type of format and club you spin at.

I agree its all in the versions you play weather it be bottle service/Open format/Top 40 type club, its about the remix version. Those borderline songs mentioned that still go over well in Prime Time but are on their way out, can be played as an opener, as long as you have a more tammed(non-dutch)remix version, and at the same time like Spring mentions, playing a more energetic remix right before the Headliner comes on prepares the club and Headliner allowing for two things to happen: For one, playing a boderline song, or not even a boderline song, maybe just a energetic older hit as the song right before the headliner goes on which gets more of the crowd out on the dancefloor, so if not already full, by the time you switch out with the headliner, they will have the floor heated a bit, and two, musically, it gives for a better seque/transition into a hype song that the headliner will probably jump start his set off with. Regardless, your last track of the night as an opener, prior to a headliner going on should have some energy to it versus the first track you played right at 9 p.m. lol! Happy Opening :)

I am also aware that we are talking strictly uptempo opening here, however I should of stated more clearly within my second paragraph, I was making a reference to when Hip Hop and slow BPM was the mainstream in peak hours years back in Top 40 clubs, and Im talking when Hip Hop and Top 40 on radio and club play still weighed in around the 100 BPM range in the early to mid 2000s’……many DJs felt it not good to have anything in the higher BPM range within thier opening sets. On the same token, at that same time when Trance and such was gaining popularity and played a bit on the radio, I know some DJs who would open the first half hour with a Trance set to get it out of the way because they knew that a lot of the crowd would not go for too much of it at Prime Time, however at the same time, the House crowd that was at the club would always complain that not enough was played, so some DJs found some House enthusiests  actually came to the club at opening to have the whole dancefloor to themselves knowing the DJ would perform this early Trance set. Anything in the higher 120 and 130 BPM range was saved as a small set within your Prime Time sets then. This was when Trance  and Progressive House was big, and people were still use to hearing longer Hip Hop sets in prime time and shorter Dance sets in Prime Time, due to the unpopularaity of House in mainstream at that time, so in short I was just referencing that whole thing in reference to today.

Excellent post…I think if I get the chance to open up for a DJ I would keep a little note pad with me and any iffy songs came up and he wasn’t there yet, you could jot them down and leave the few songs for him so he knows what version and time you played it.  Idk…just seems like it would be good for the opener and headliner to communicate a little.

As far as sinternet…it is http://www.sinternet.com and you can click on either pop, urban, or rhythm timetables.  It lets you know when a song came out and how many plays its getting on those particular type of stations.
