PS while you guys are doing some playlist episodes…maybe you could do a playlist of or at least mention some songs that are fun to scratch into vs. mixing in a 4 or 8 bar intro

I play for college crowds 90% of the time so my opening sets are pretty strictly down south hip hop and some uptempo older stuff. The list you guys compiled is a great reference for other gigs and even helps the ones i’m doing now!

Here are a few of my suggestions

right above it- Lil Wayne Drakeall around the world- Mac Miller
    say yeah- wiz khalifa
    donald trump- Mac Miller
    headlines drake
make it rain fat joe lil wayne
i’m on one (zimmies extra thick remix which u guys posted once)
    racks remix- Yc wiz khalifa
grove street party- waka flaka flame
    i run slim thug
    you don’t know jay z

then when things start to heat up a little

    country grammar nelly
    N*ggas in paris jay kanye
How low can you go Ludacris
This is the carter, go dj lil wayne
    every girl young money

Yeah I agree with what Ryan said. I’m in NY and I always DJ 6 hours from 10-4. My warmup is usally 2 to 2.5 hours long so you get pretty creative, changing it every week…

Awesome list guys and can’t wait to see what else you come up with! I think this is a great list to start with and build upon, speaking from someone who only DJ’s out occasionally and always has a hard time figuring out what to play.

    Question…
I understand this is an ‘opening’ set, but lets say you basically play the whole night, something like 10-2am. Do you guys setup different playlists for each part of the night? For instance:

    10-11pm – Opening Set
    11-12:30 – Mainstream Set {or whatever you would call it}
    12:30-2pm – Peak Set

Also, well I guess another ‘playlist’ question I’m curious to hear how other DJ’s deal with this type of situation…

Let’s say you got a tough crowd, or your playing out at a new spot or new people you’ve never met before. You show up with your playlists(s) and, for example, playing in the 1st hour using your ‘opening’ set. You play a few R&B type songs and people are feeling it, but then after 2 or 3 you switch to Raggae or HipHop and the vibe goes down. At that point, would you axe the playlist at that point (for now) and then play more R&B? If that’s a yes, then great… but let’s say I don’t have anymore R&B at a similar tempo range in my ‘opening’ playlist! What do you do? Just curious… Do you then go hunting for R&B tracks in your library?

So I’m just looking for some insight on what other people do in the above situation, or even if you’ve shown up to a gig or club and you just, down right, missed the mark on the music?

In these situations, personally, I get very nervous if this happens and I freeze. I find myself thinking ‘what the f**k’ do I play next, and then I forget what songs I could be playing, so it’s like I’m flying blind. Next thing you know there is :30 seconds left on the track playing and I haven’t found a song to play.

Just like Scar said in Lion King
      “Be Prepared”
If you have any intentions of playing any sort of genre be sure to have at least enough of it that you can improvise a solid hour long set.  And when I mean improvise I mean roughly AT LEAST 3 hours worth of music for every 1 hour you have to play that genre.  If you can’t do that I would highly suggest not even bothering with the genre, unless if you know how to switch out of it perfectly without upsetting the crowd.
For example, I’m not big on DJing reggae/dancehall (yet) so when I do I usually play tracks EVERYONE knows such as anything by Sean Paul, Beanie Man, Vybz Kartel, etc then I end it with Pon Di Floor because it is around 130 bpm and it sets people up perfectly to begin listening to more uptempo mainstream music.

To answer your question about playing R&B then people not feeling it once you switch to hip-hop.  This is where you separate yourself from the little kids.  It’s simply reading the crowd, and to be honest (not sure how every DJ handles this) I usually use the first hour of my set to get a feel of the crowd.
For example, I’ll play 15 minutes of hip-hop, 15 minutes of moombahton remixes, 15 minutes of top 40, then throwbacks, then uptempo (the usual).  Basically by setting up my first hour like this I get a general feel of how people will react when they are a bit more intoxicated and I know what to play and what NOT to play (even more important).

The only time to go against reading the crowd is if the club/promoter/owner is very strict on music genres to play.  In that case you have to fend for yourself and blame it on the owner if any club-goers question your choice of music.

Love the playlist like this guys! Always great to get some new ideas/songs for that first hour at the club!!!!

  • DJ CONSTRUC

Nice list guys! a few tracks that I would add to this would be…

Usher – Lil Freak, Daddy’s home
    J. Lo – Into You
    Rihanna – Whats My Name
    Big Sean – My Last
    Iyaz – Replay, Pretty Girls
Kelly Rowland – Lay It On Me
    Bobby Brackin – 143
Sean Paul – Got 2 Love You
Gym Class Heroes – Stereo Hearts

I think everything recent in this tempo is safe, I don’t even think uptempo remixes of these songs are vital to a headliner’s set or your set later on if your spinning the whole night. When I’m headlining I actually prefer the opener to play the hottest tracks in this tempo range because I don’t want people to have to listen to outdated music until my set starts.

    • DJ CONSTRUC

Damn, i mentioned some tracks that were on the list… my bad lol
