Weekend Weapons

February 12th, 2011 4 comments

It’s your favorite time of the week….Let’s get right to it.

Let’s start with our friend from the UK. Johnny Frenetic hit us up with this mix of the Cee-lo that keeps the original intact, but it gives it that little something extra for the club. This is one of the few non-Bmore redrums I’ve heard of this track, so definitely a good addition to your set.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

DJ Xkaliber sent us this next mix that “electrifies” the new Birdman and Weezy track “Fire Flame”. This is the first uptempo mix I’ve heard of this, so should go well with all the other uptempo Hip Hop remixes. Lots of hype here too.

Our boy DJ Dolo is back again with another dope mash from his crew The Reachers. Dolo says, “Hey guys here’s our take on Spring’s fave track at the moment “Make It Rain”. We put the vocals over Twin Pack’s “Kick Some Ass” and did some chopping, etc. It gives it a disco house/electro feel.”

Travis Porter – Make It Rain (Reachers Remix) — DOWNLOAD HERE

—————————————————————————————————————————————

Marcus McBride of Full Tilt Remix is back this week as well. Lucky for you guys, he’s got another mix that probably won’t make the FT series, which means you can have it here. Marcus told us, “It’s a sort of a minimal/house take on Martin Solveig’s “Hello” done at 128 BPM.”

Now onto the mandatory Britney Remix segment of our Weekend Weapons.

Two Words: Disco Fries. (Ps….It’s time to start getting excited for “Killer”. That’s Disco Fries ft. Clinton Sparks coming out in less than 2 weeks. Plenty more on that coming very soon. For now enjoy their DOPE Brit remix.)

——————————————————————————————————————————————————-

The next Brit remix was given to us by DJ Mo Rada (You should all have his classic “Free Fallin” mash with the “Tipsy” drums). “DJ Cova and I are with the same talent agency (Upper Level Entertainment Group), so we look out for each other. He just finished a new mix of Britney’s ‘Hold It Against Me’ that I wanted to send your way. It’s a collaboration with Johnny Budz and is currently getting spins on BPM.”

Big shout out to Brian Armand for sending us another dope mix. We hope you guys didn’t sleep on his Harry Belfonte/Lil Wayne electro mixes posted a couple weeks ago. (A Harry B. and Weezy combo, never thought I would say that.) Brian wrote “Hey Guys, back with another remix…this time Britneys latest. Its an original production, though I added a couple of samples thru out the song.I tell you this because when I concieved the idea of the ElektroKatz, it was going to be strictly an original production project, however Im pleased with the outcome with the little samples I did use! The only instrumental sample is that of the “Sweet Dreams” synth, and I put that in the sampler, and replayed the notes on the keyboard, and thru out you can hear the re-arrangement I did to that synth. Other than that, the drums, bass, sidechained noise, and the chorus breakdown strings are mine. I slowed the track from the original 134 to130 BPM, because I know in my sets at least theres more songs closer to 130 BPM, and it dosnt sound bad 4 beats down from the original.”

Last but not least, our buddy DJ Kontrol blessed us with this gem, also using “Sweet Dreams” (Those mixes never fail). Gotta give Kontrol his probs — definitely been on his grind. Can’t wait to try this one in the club!

Editorial: “Men On Fads” (By DJ Supersede)

February 1st, 2011 5 comments

Fads are a funny thing, especially in the music industry. We all know that DJs and producers a like, love to take trends so far, that their name or brand is ruined forever just by being associated with said fad. A fad, sometimes called a trend, meme or a craze, is any form of behavior that develops among a large population and is collectively followed with enthusiasm for some period, generally as a result of the behavior’s being perceived as novel in some way. We see these trends in the styles of music that DJs play, come and go along with the publics knowledge of how hip that musical genre is. I think we can safely infer that Dirty Dutch has been the trend of 2010, and continues to rear it’s ugly (and high-pitched) head, into every nightclub across America. Don’t get me wrong, I play a lot of the big Dirty Dutch tracks that you hear in every DJs set, but like Solarz said in his Rock-It Rant, you have to use M-O-D-E-R-A-T-I-O-N.
I ask myself almost every single day, “When is this fad going to disappear, and what is going to be next?” It’s hard to put an exact point in time, on when these trends in production will fade into the darkness, but I think that you can sense that time approaching, when you start to hear the likeness of that fad, on the radio. Take the new Britney Spears single, “Hold It Against Me,” for example. People lost their minds on the social networking twitter face blogs, when they heard the breakdown for the first time, and noticed that Dr. Luke and Max had used dub step influences, in the production of the nations next #1 single. I give them credit, for having the marbles to use such a “fringe” genre’s musical styling, because getting the public to actually like dub step is going to be a monumental task. But if anyone can do it, it’s Britney, so I’m not sweating it. My production partner Nick Morrison, has been doing a low-key dub step night in Orlando for the past few months, and has seen it grow from 15 people, to over 200 regulars in attendance (in a venue that should only hold 150.) Does this mean that dub step (aka robots having sex) is about to take over the world? I hope so.
I guess what I’m trying to achieve in this never-ending, pointless ramble, is that as producers, DJs, and audience members, we need to sit back and appreciate our peers, when we see that they have a real talent and passion for their craft. Not when they’re imploding to the norm, and producing or mixing every single top 40 track, with a Dirty Dutch instrumental mashed (blended, or whatever you call it) underneath it, out of key. Take a look around you, and see who is actually “PERFORMING,” and not just “ipod-ing,” and then go give them a big high-five, DJ Cheapshot style. Be an original, and don’t be scared to do so, and we’ll all live happy ever after.

Weekend Weapons!

Another week of some quality tunes…

Gonna start this week off with a couple mixes sent to us from our friend Brian Armand of The ElektroKatz. Brian is a regular in our comments section, which is well worth checking out thanks to people like him. This “Day-Oh/A Milli” remix he did sounds sooooo dope!!

Brian says, “They are both original productions, no samples, just of course the vocals! I made 2, One featuring Lil Wayne, however the straight Day O “Daylight Hangover” remix has a backstory I created for it.The original song as Im sure you guys know is about banana boat workers on the night shift wanting to go home….My version is about leaving a city club at about 4 or 6 a.m. in the morning after a long night drinking and dancing. As you walk outside from the club its Daylight, and your hangover is just about kicking in, hence the beginning vocals, “Daylight come, and we wanna go home”

With so much talk of 6 Foot 7 Foot being the new Milli, I figured I would combine them within my original production, and for good measure, of course add some of what Lil Wayne sampled from..Day O…I didnt have access to the 6 Foot Acapella, so I went right to the source, the original Day O song. I think Harry Belafonte remade the song years and years ago, however I used his original 1956 recording, because its easier to make an acapella from music back than, being the fidelity was not as good as todays technolagy as you know! I used a parametric EQ amongst other FX to filter out any drums and such. Its much in the same vain as what Jason Nevins did with Run DMCs ” Its Like That” and others.”

Make sure you guys thank Brian in the comment section here. This is definitely the best take I’ve heard of “Day-O” so far. Peep for yourself!

Over the last few months you may have noticed our sponsors ads at the beginning of our videos.  Thanks to them we can continue to bring you Remix Report on a regular basis!  Of course there are costs associated with running our site, so we’re very appreciative of the support from YourDJDrops.com, YourDJLogo.com & YourDJSkins.com.  We wouldn’t have them advertise on our site if we didn’t believe they offered a top notch product that all DJ’s could benefit from.

Please take a minute this holiday season to see if our sponsors have a product you can benefit from.  Your support of them helps support us!

Thank you and Happy Holidays!

Weekend Recap

August 30th, 2010 1 comment

Yes, this was another busy weekend – I did the usual Friday, Saturday, Sunday.  However, the real work was put in at my place on my computer.  All four of the major remix sites are currently having big sales, which lead to JD and I performing a nice, quality raping.  After dropping a little loot, (yes we support our friends!), we came away with close to 100 new tracks.  No, we don’t have plans on playing 100 remixes in a row, BUT, now we do have plenty of new ammo to keep from going stale.   I’m not gonna go in depth about this experience now, instead I will save it for tomorrow’s editorial, so make sure to check back manana.  I will say this now though:  All the DJs who are constantly asking how to switch up your sets, head to the sites now while you can get double for your money!!

www.CrooklynClan.net

www.Crack4Djs.net
www.StrictlyHits.com

Trust me, this isn’t an advertisement — this is advice.  Between all four sites, there is definitely plenty of useful stuff that we all are better off having in our crates!  Stock up now while you can get the most bang for your buck.  Again, more on this tomorrow.  (Don’t wait for our editorial before you buy, because the sales may be over!)

Speaking of the remix sites, I hope by now that everyone has copped DJ AM’s “It Takes Rock” from CrooklynClan.  It’s a track I draw for each and everytime I play at Scorpion Bar. Of course, with this weekend being the one year anniversary of AM’s passing, it made me think a little as I loaded it onto my serato deck.  I wish the crowd knew that this was an AM remix and if I had a mic there, I would have definitely mentioned it.  This track was really mind blowing to me the first time I heard it.  It was done about five or six years ago, and that was before doing something like this was more commonplace.  My crowd hears it every week and it never fails.  AM still lives for sure.

Finally, big shout out to Clinton Sparks!!  He’s been busier lately (busy is normal for him) knocking out tons and tons of custom edits of “Favorite DJ”.
When someone goes out of their way to take care of us, we NEED to support them.  This is a dope record to begin with, so that shouldn’t be asking too much.  Check out www.facebook.com/DjClintonSparks for info on how to get yours!  I can’t say it enough:  Support Clinton, support Lil Jon, support Honorebel, and anyone else who is going out of their way to service DJs with free drops.  Artists are like athletes who’ve been trained to say all the right things.  Of course they all say how much they appreciate the DJ, but few have actually put in the time and effort to show it.  That’s why it’s important to support the ones that do!!!

———————————————————————————

Yes, another weekend has come to an end, and like Spring said, a good couple hours of it went to sifting through the remix sites for a few quality remixes/mashups.  You really have to dig sometimes, but you’ll find some gems.  And at $.99, even if you get a flop or 2, it’s not the end of the world.

If you like sales, you should also check out Guitar Center’s sale through tomorrow where you can Buy 1, Get 1 Free on select items.  I picked up 2 50ft. XLR cords for $50 and plan on getting 2 more by tomorrow.  We always need more wires!!

I have to say, this weekend was great.  The energy Friday night at Shrine was off the hook and I felt really good about my set.  Saturday I played a local bar, for the first time in a long time, for a friends birthday party.  It was an interesting night.  It was one of those, do I play what the person who hired me wants to hear, or what the girls dancing want to hear, kind of nights.  Everyone said they had a great time, so I guess I bridged that gap alright.  Until next weekend…

Be Back On Monday!!

July 30th, 2010 3 comments

Very busy week for JD and myself, and we both wanna apologize for the lack of updates this week!   We will be back on Monday 4Sho!!

A couple notes:

1)  Big shoutout to DJs Donk, C-Flo, and Chi Duly!!  Their remix and video collage of some of the most popular YouTube clips cleverly put together has been gaining quite a buzz lately — even earning them a retweet from Ashton Kutcher.  Pretty big deal!  It’s called “Happiest Wedding Cry In The World.”
Watch Here

2) Also, make sure to check out “Born To Be Wild 2010″ by The Anthem Kingz which is moving up Crooklyn Clan’s monthly Top 20 real quick.  They took a bare bones rough draft that I had, and seriously took it to another level.  Really amazing what they did – and it works very well in the club!!

Hot Mixxxx: Joe Maz of DiscoTech

July 9th, 2010 1 comment

If you spin at an “Open Format” club, then you should definitely be familiar with the work of Joe Maz and DiscoTech.  With their countless quality remixes on CrooklynClan.net, they definitely raised the bar for every other remixer/masher in the game.  I don’t know what I would do at the club if my DiscoTech tracks disappeared, and I’m sure many of you feel the same.  Anyway, enough of that, cause Joe really needs no intro.  His new cd entitled “Fashionably Late” features 11 unreleased DiscoTech remixes/re-edits which will be released very soon!

Editorial: Is It Okay To Expose Yourself In Public??

April 21st, 2010 1 comment

Ever since JD and I started this site, we’ve been getting numerous emails (please keep them coming!) on a variety of topics.  But one of the most common, is from younger remixers, who want to know how to get their remixes out there.  We also run into some DJs who question whether it’s worth putting their mixes out there in the first place.

If you are looking to build your name beyond the local scene, then the answer to that last question is almost always YES!!  For DJs who are just starting out, you obviously want as much exposure as possible.  Nowadays, thanks to the many DJ/Remix related sites on the internet, it is relatively easy to get noticed — if you are consistently putting out quality stuff.

Another thing that the internet has made easy, is the ability for up-and-coming to DJs to find sets played by the DJs they look up to.  When you catch one of these sets, you may very well hear an exclusive remix which the DJ has yet to make available to the public.  DJ AM is a prime example.  Anyone who’s watched the countless AM videos on youtube knows that he had some crazy material which he never released.  Now let me state the obvious:  You (nor I) am DJ AM.  AM was a rockstar.  He was one of the few DJs in this country that could really draw a crowd.  He had a crazy schedule of bookings all throughout the globe, and people were really interested in what he played.   You already how big AM was, but my point is, he didn’t have to release his mixes.  He had enough people making the effort to go to his shows, and find his youtube videos, where he knew the people who cared would find a way to hear his stuff anyway.  He was that rare DJ.

Now of course, the main point of being a DJ is to be heard.  So unless you are on top of the game like AM was, where people are gonna search for your live sets, you’ll have to make the effort yourself to get noticed.  That means making dope remixes, and putting them in everyone’s hands that you can.   Being on the remix sites are dope, because your name is there for all to see.  If you build a reputation that way, then people can go to the site to find your whole catalog.  Plus, if you are consistent, you can make a nice little sum of cash.  Still, many of the DJs on the sites have a good understanding of  the previous concept I discussed.  They already know that if they make a remix that’s especially dope, it’s likely in their best interest to give it out for free as well as put it up on the sites.  In other words, the money you can make from selling a mix on a site is good, however the exposure you gain from giving a dope remix out for free, and getting it in as many hands as possible, can be PRICELESS!!

We all know that marketing is a very important aspect of being a successful DJ.  However, business cards, flyers, and social networking, are only a small part.  Putting dope remixes out on the web will likely trump all those.  Ask Discotech or Rock-It Scientists.  Ask DJ Scooter, who recently saw Def Jam put out his dancehall remix of Rihanna’s “Rude Boy”.  It’s every DJs goal to work with the major labels, and Scooter agrees that if it wasn’t for his music being up for free on sites like DJCity.com and NewMusicServer.com, his mix wouldn’t have had the same success.  “In retrospect, I’m defintely glad I had the music on those sites, or it might not have worked out like it did”, says Scooter.

Now thanks to sites like Beezo and Freakonomix, DJs can share more than just their remixes online.  Because of sites like those, DJs can actually put up their live sets for fans to download.  Hence, the same questions arrise with this as with remixes, and really, the answer is exactly the same.  While you may be hesitant to put your best sets for download on the net, you have to understand the same issue.  You do want as many people as possible to hear you, right??  And unless you are travelling the globe, and have fans posting youtube videos of all your performances, putting up your mixes for download is definitely the answer!  Still not sure this is a good idea?  Look at DJ Scene.  He’s one of the top travelling DJs in the country, with a solid fanbase, yet he still makes the effort to give out his remixes and put up his live sets for download.  If someone like Scene is still working for exposure, you should be as well!!
