Happy Superbowl! — 2012 Kick Off Mix

February 5th, 2012 No comments

Here’s my first mix of the year, it was supposed to be a 2 part downloadable set for the Super Bowl, but I actually got into it and figured I’d press some up as well.  Then I get even more over-excited and made a 3rd part.   Gonna throw Pt 3 on my facebook fanpage early this week as a “Like to download” feature and see how that works.  Anyway, here’s the links to download the double cd:

I’ll talk about some stuff from it in our Weekend Recap tomorrow – including my new love for the explosion sound!  You probably won’t be able to tell all that much from listening to the mix, but it actually helped out a lot.

2011 Recap: Remix Report Year In Review

January 4th, 2012 8 comments

I was just rereading last year’s recap, and since that was our first year doing this, it focused a lot on how we started this site.  2010 was an awesome year for sure, and it was a real learning experience for JD and I.  We had promised to take what we learned in the first year and use it to make 2011 even better.  While I’m not sure we met all of our goals this year, I still think 2011 was a definite success.  We promised to have better sound quality in our interviews and we also promised some dope new features on the site.  Well, we did slack quite a bit on getting interviews toward the end of the year, but the ones we did do sounded quite a bit better.  As for the features, I can proudly say we hit a few home runs in that area. Anyway, since we’ve discussed the start of this site many times already, let’s just get right into the content.  Here’s our TOP TEN MOMENTS/SEGMENTS OF 2011 :

10) Opening Playlist Update (Watch HERE & HERE)

2010 was the year that openers “burning” headliners became an unbelievably hot topic.  (Here’s to hoping it doesn’t get mentioned even once in 2012).  JD and I were a little tired of hearing everyone bashing these burners without anyone offering them any help.  So, we put together a few lists of good opening songs, got some help from our loyal visitors, and the segment became a huge hit.  Well, in 2011, a lot of the songs that were considered primetime 2010 hits became open game for opening DJs to play in 2011.  Hence, we offered a couple updates to our series, which I’m sure we’ll do again in 2012.

9) DJ Douchebag (Watch HERE)

New Year’s Resolution Assignment!

December 29th, 2011 6 comments

We’re very excited to present our first annual New Year’s Resolution Assignment for all of our visitors!  We hope all our regulars will participate, because this is something where everyone can build off each other’s responses.  Your assignment is very simple:   PICK FROM ONE OF THE CATEGORIES BELOW in which you feel either your music selection is lacking, or your awesome set has become a little stale.  Now search your hard drive, cd collection, record pool, or anywhere else on the interweb where music is found and FIND AND LIST FIVE SONGS THAT YOU CAN ADD TO YOUR SET.  These can be songs that you’ve totally forgotten about, songs that you never thought to play in the first place, or even souped up edits that you didn’t know existed.  If the track isn’t club ready, then make an edit of your own and explain what you did.  For more info, peep the vid above.   JD and I will be participating and hopefully all of you will too!  We’re trying to freshen up your sets for 2012!!

Over the last year you’ve seen our sponsors ads at the beginning of our videos.  Thanks to them we can continue to bring you Remix Report on a regular basis!  Of course there are costs associated with running our site, so we’re very appreciative of the support from YourDJDrops.com, YourDJLogo.com & YourDJSkins.com.  We wouldn’t have them advertise on our site if we didn’t believe they offered a top notch product that all DJ’s could benefit from.

Please take a minute this holiday season to see if our sponsors have a product you can benefit from.  Your support of them helps support us!

Thank you and Happy Holidays!

By now, we hope you’ve grabbed Brian Armand‘s (ElektroKatz) remix of “Eye of The Tiger” from a couple weeks ago.  One of the sickest EDM/Rock mixes I’ve heard in a while!  This week Brian has another goodie for you, it’s his take on Adele’s smash “Rolling In The Deep”.  Don’t sleep on this track!

Mike Gloria‘s buzz is growing more and more every week, and he’s back yet again with another quality track.  Mike told us, “It’s a remix of Pitbull and Ne-Yo’s new track “Give Me Everything Tonight”  It’s getting HUGE feedback already and I think it might be one of the biggest songs of the Summer.  There’s no acapella for this, so I had to filter the original and build around it…but it came out much better then I expected.  I was able to pretty much make everyone believe I had an acapella for this remix.  Let me know what you guys think!”

WMC Scratch Summit 2011

March 12th, 2011 1 comment

Our resident record rubbing guru Rob Riggs hosted the WMC Scratch Summit last week at the Scratch Academy in Miami.  This has become an annual event held every year during Winter Music Conference and is a great place to network and show off your skills.

This year Rob broadcasted the event live on Ustream and has given us the video to post for you all to see.  There are 2 parts and it’s approximately 4 1/2 hours long.  Part 1 is 4-7PM, Part 2 is 7-8:30PM.

Rob Riggs does and impromtu scratch/Ableton showcase with Jesse Fellus starting at 1 minute into Part 2 if you want to jump right into the good stuff.  The rest of the video is DJ’s going back and forth scratching and talking here and there.

Let’s get right to it!….

New from THE MIGHTY ROCK-IT SCIENTISTS: A dope 75 BPM remix of “Hello” using a clever Drake sample. Imagine a world where club owners won’t yell at you for staying in the 70-80 BPM range?? Well, the new Katy Perry is 75 and I just saw DJ Starski post a blend of the Britney over “All I Do Is Win” up on Clan. With that said, SICK REMIX here! Also, you know what it is — New Rock-It! Rant tomorrow!!

Martin Solveig ft. Dragonette – Hello (Rock-It! Scientists 808 Bass Hip-Hop Remix) — DOWNLOAD ZIP HERE

Now, from DJ Aristocat (who we had the pleasure of meeting in Miami last year), here’s a nice dubstep remix of Dead Prez’s “It’s Still Bigger Than Hip-Hop”. This blend is courtesy of Aristocat’s side project 3 Stripes, where he partners with Tate La Rock.

Next, our friend Brian Armand of The ElektroKatz is back with a dope club mix of the Biggie classic “Hypnotize”. Brian told us, “Its 125 BPM, kind of on the long side at 7 minutes, mainly because I kind of went a little too crazy with the vocoder at the end(lol), sort of giving it a more climatic ending. I had fun though making this remix. I took some of BIGs’ lines, ran them thru the vocoder and played them on the keyboard, giving his rap vocals a “melodic” feel playing different chords and such.” Well, all the hard work paid off — Enjoy!

Finally, an edit of the Biggie track we mentioned in our Playlist Wednesday track this week (“Mo Money Mo Problems”). DJ Dam made this edit using an intro, chorus, biggie verse, then looped “hands high” eventually leading to an acapella out. Definitely useful to have!

It’s your favorite time of the week….Let’s get right to it.

Let’s start with our friend from the UK. Johnny Frenetic hit us up with this mix of the Cee-lo that keeps the original intact, but it gives it that little something extra for the club. This is one of the few non-Bmore redrums I’ve heard of this track, so definitely a good addition to your set.

Cee-lo Green – F*ck You (Sonikross & Johnny Frenetic Remix — DOWNLOAD HERE

————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

DJ Xkaliber sent us this next mix that “electrifies” the new Birdman and Weezy track “Fire Flame”. This is the first uptempo mix I’ve heard of this, so should go well with all the other uptempo Hip Hop remixes. Lots of hype here too.

Birdman ft. Lil Wayne – Fire Flame (DJ Xkaliber Remix) — DOWNLOAD HERE

————————————————————————————————————————————————

Our boy DJ Dolo is back again with another dope mash from his crew The Reachers. Dolo says, “Hey guys here’s our take on Spring’s fave track at the moment “Make It Rain”. We put the vocals over Twin Pack’s “Kick Some Ass” and did some chopping, etc. It gives it a disco house/electro feel.”

Travis Porter – Make It Rain (Reachers Remix) — DOWNLOAD HERE

—————————————————————————————————————————————

Marcus McBride of Full Tilt Remix is back this week as well. Lucky for you guys, he’s got another mix that probably won’t make the FT series, which means you can have it here. Marcus told us, “It’s a sort of a minimal/house take on Martin Solveig’s “Hello” done at 128 BPM.”

Martin Solveig ft. Dragonette – Hello (Marcus McBride Remix) — DOWNLOAD HERE

——————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Now onto the mandatory Britney Remix segment of our Weekend Weapons.

Two Words: Disco Fries. (Ps….It’s time to start getting excited for “Killer”. That’s Disco Fries ft. Clinton Sparks coming out in less than 2 weeks. Plenty more on that coming very soon. For now enjoy their DOPE Brit remix.)

Britney Spears – Hold It Against Me (Disco Fries Remix) — DOWNLOAD HERE

——————————————————————————————————————————————————-

The next Brit remix was given to us by DJ Mo Rada (You should all have his classic “Free Fallin” mash with the “Tipsy” drums). “DJ Cova and I are with the same talent agency (Upper Level Entertainment Group), so we look out for each other. He just finished a new mix of Britney’s ‘Hold It Against Me’ that I wanted to send your way. It’s a collaboration with Johnny Budz and is currently getting spins on BPM.”

————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Big shout out to Brian Armand for sending us another dope mix. We hope you guys didn’t sleep on his Harry Belfonte/Lil Wayne electro mixes posted a couple weeks ago. (A Harry B. and Weezy combo, never thought I would say that.) Brian wrote “Hey Guys, back with another remix…this time Britneys latest. Its an original production, though I added a couple of samples thru out the song.I tell you this because when I concieved the idea of the ElektroKatz, it was going to be strictly an original production project, however Im pleased with the outcome with the little samples I did use! The only instrumental sample is that of the “Sweet Dreams” synth, and I put that in the sampler, and replayed the notes on the keyboard, and thru out you can hear the re-arrangement I did to that synth. Other than that, the drums, bass, sidechained noise, and the chorus breakdown strings are mine. I slowed the track from the original 134 to130 BPM, because I know in my sets at least theres more songs closer to 130 BPM, and it dosnt sound bad 4 beats down from the original.”

Britney Spears – Hold It Against Me (ElektroKatz Bri-an-Brit Flip The Script Remix) — DOWNLOAD HERE

———————————————————————————————————————————————

Last but not least, our buddy DJ Kontrol blessed us with this gem, also using “Sweet Dreams” (Those mixes never fail). Gotta give Kontrol his probs — definitely been on his grind. Can’t wait to try this one in the club!

Editorial: “Men On Fads” (By DJ Supersede)

February 1st, 2011 5 comments

Fads are a funny thing, especially in the music industry. We all know that DJs and producers a like, love to take trends so far, that their name or brand is ruined forever just by being associated with said fad. A fad, sometimes called a trend, meme or a craze, is any form of behavior that develops among a large population and is collectively followed with enthusiasm for some period, generally as a result of the behavior’s being perceived as novel in some way. We see these trends in the styles of music that DJs play, come and go along with the publics knowledge of how hip that musical genre is. I think we can safely infer that Dirty Dutch has been the trend of 2010, and continues to rear it’s ugly (and high-pitched) head, into every nightclub across America. Don’t get me wrong, I play a lot of the big Dirty Dutch tracks that you hear in every DJs set, but like Solarz said in his Rock-It Rant, you have to use M-O-D-E-R-A-T-I-O-N.
I ask myself almost every single day, “When is this fad going to disappear, and what is going to be next?” It’s hard to put an exact point in time, on when these trends in production will fade into the darkness, but I think that you can sense that time approaching, when you start to hear the likeness of that fad, on the radio. Take the new Britney Spears single, “Hold It Against Me,” for example. People lost their minds on the social networking twitter face blogs, when they heard the breakdown for the first time, and noticed that Dr. Luke and Max had used dub step influences, in the production of the nations next #1 single. I give them credit, for having the marbles to use such a “fringe” genre’s musical styling, because getting the public to actually like dub step is going to be a monumental task. But if anyone can do it, it’s Britney, so I’m not sweating it. My production partner Nick Morrison, has been doing a low-key dub step night in Orlando for the past few months, and has seen it grow from 15 people, to over 200 regulars in attendance (in a venue that should only hold 150.) Does this mean that dub step (aka robots having sex) is about to take over the world? I hope so.
I guess what I’m trying to achieve in this never-ending, pointless ramble, is that as producers, DJs, and audience members, we need to sit back and appreciate our peers, when we see that they have a real talent and passion for their craft. Not when they’re imploding to the norm, and producing or mixing every single top 40 track, with a Dirty Dutch instrumental mashed (blended, or whatever you call it) underneath it, out of key. Take a look around you, and see who is actually “PERFORMING,” and not just “ipod-ing,” and then go give them a big high-five, DJ Cheapshot style. Be an original, and don’t be scared to do so, and we’ll all live happy ever after.
